Luxury hotels
The city's top tier: full-service hotels with lake views, pools, generators and conference facilities.
Lakeside resorts
Beachfront hotels and clubs north and south of the port, best for weekends built around the water.
Mid-range hotels
Reliable comfort in Rohero and Kinindo at fair prices — the sweet spot for most travelers.
Budget guesthouses
Clean, simple rooms and church-run hostels for travelers watching every franc.
Choosing an area
Rohero puts you near restaurants, embassies and offices — the default for work trips. Kinindo trades a short commute for greener streets and proximity to the beach clubs. The centre is convenient by day but quiet at night. If your trip is really about the lake, stay on it: waking to Tanganyika at your door is worth the taxi rides into town.
Practicalities
Power cuts happen; good hotels run generators, cheaper ones may not — ask. Air conditioning matters most from September to May. Payment is usually cash in Burundian francs or US dollars (bring clean, recent bills); card acceptance is improving at the top end only. See money and currency.
