Getting around Bujumbura

Bujumbura is small enough that no ride across town should take more than half an hour outside rush hour. There's no formal public transit map — the system is taxis, motos, tuk-tuks and minibuses, all negotiated, all cash — but it works, and it's cheap.

How it works

Taxis are unmetered saloon cars: agree the fare before getting in. Short city hops are inexpensive; airport runs and evening trips cost more. Hotels keep numbers for trusted drivers — get one good driver's WhatsApp on day one and your week gets easier. Moto-taxis are the fastest way through traffic and fine for short daytime hops with a helmet; skip them at night and in rain. Tuk-tuks cover the flat lakeside districts. Minibuses run fixed corridors for the lowest fares — a cultural experience worth having at least once.

Walking is pleasant in Rohero and the centre by day; after dark, take a vehicle everywhere, as streetlighting is limited. See safety.
